FAQ

What does extrusion/extruded mean?

Extrusion is a process technology by which a material – in our case, plastic – is pressed by means of pressure and temperature using tools manufactured for this purpose into a defined shape. We use Döllken Lighting’s extrusion process to sheathe our LED conductor films with previously melted plastic in a continuous process. Because of the various formulations of the material, this can even involve technically very demanding co-extrusion.

Do Döllken Lighting LED strips contain PVC?

No, none of our products – sheathed strips, connectors or cables – contain PVC or other chlorine-containing materials. All of the materials that we use are of course also REACH-compliant. In addition, we also process potential scrap as much as possible and/or arrange for appropriate recycling.

Where are the products made?

We manufacture all of our LED strips and conductor films in Germany, and only purchase individual components such as LED chips from suppliers well-known for their high quality. Our conductor films are therefore not purchased, but 100% German-manufactured. A large part of our assembly profiles is also manufactured directly in Germany, although we allow components to be manufactured elsewhere in Europe subject to our quality criteria. For the ballast and control systems that we offer, we rely on a small selection of equipment from primarily Asian manufacturers.

What is DualWhite?

Our DualWhite variants (recognisable by their product names such as CoreFlex 14/DualWhite) incorporate two different, white LED chips: a 2700 Kelvin (warm white) and a 5000 Kelvin (cold white) chip. It is therefore possible to adjust the colour temperature of the light according to your wishes or the time of day using an appropriate control system – all with a single product.

Does the MultiColor Flex strip only have a RGB colour change?

Naturally, MultiColor Flex is also available in 14/RGB and 14/RGBW versions with RGB fittings. It is also available in single- and dual-white variants.
The name MultiColor Flex originates from the fact that this was our first LED strip to have white side and top surfaces. In addition, we can tint the plastic in any colour, and hence use the strip as a design element, even when it is switched off.

Does the LinearColor Flex strip have a RGB colour change?

The LinearColor Flex strip is available in RGB/RGBW versions, with a pure white light colour at various colour temperatures as well as DualWhite variants.
Similar to MultiColor Flex, its name indicates that the light emission surfaces can be tinted in any colour, to provide a design element even when switched off. This is a popular variant, especially for corporate lighting design.

Are Döllken Lighting LED strips suitable for outdoor areas or underwater applications?

Yes, all of our strips are IP68-protected thanks to our sheathing technology, extrusion, and hence suitable for permanent submersion in water. Regular outdoor use – regardless of the area – is therefore not a problem. We have even tested our products at a water depth of 3250 m – including the end-caps, connectors and the transition from strip to cable. Our entire system is IP68-certified thanks to our patented connection process, and is therefore also protected from water ingress due to capillary action.

To which areas are your LED lights particularly suited?

Because of their full IP68 and IK08 protection, our products are best suited to outdoor applications or areas subject to mechanical loads and/or harsh climatic conditions. Indoors, these features naturally also provide protection against damage from detergents, contact or air humidity.

How are the LED strips fitted?

We have developed special aluminium assembly profiles to ensure the secure installation of all of our extruded strips. You will find drawings on the product pages of our website and on the respective data sheets for the LED strips.

Are aluminium profiles also suitable for underwater installation?

Aluminium is only partially suitable for underwater use. In instances where the strips must be installed below the water surface, we recommend bonding with assembly adhesive. We will be glad to recommend appropriate types for the relevant substrate. Special stainless steel or plastic installation profiles are also available, depending on the application.

Is it possible to control these strips using DALI/0-10V/DMX equipment?

All of our strips can be controlled using suitable electronics with all common protocol types. The units must however emit a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal to ensure reliable dimming.

What are the maximum lengths for the cables?

Due to the voltage drop, this is dependent on various factors such as the cable cross-section used or the length of the LED strip. As a guideline for cable lengths available from our assembly service, we assume a maximum standard length of five metres, but adjust lengths on a project or application basis in consultation with our customers.

I have heard about “flicker” in LED lights ‒ does this affect your products?

Flicker is always a phenomenon which occurs in conjunction with the relevant ballast or control units and LEDs dimming used. When a high-quality dimmer is used, strip flicker is imperceptible and not directly harmful.

Can your LED strips also be produced in special light or sheathing colours?

Thanks to our extrusion process, we can individually tint the coating layers and side surfaces of almost all of our products and hence also comply with corporate lighting design requirements or filter out specific components of the light spectrum. Please simply get in touch with us.
